The Acts of the Apostles is a valuable history of the early Christian church. Acts was written in Greek, and although the author does not name himself, evidence outside the Scriptures and inferences from the book itself lead to the conclusion that the author was Luke. The gospel of Luke concludes where Acts begins, namely, with Christ’s Ascension into heaven. After an introductory account of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles at Pentecost, Luke pursues as a central theme the spread of Christianity to the Gentile world under the guiding inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

"Luke Volume II," often called "The Acts of the Apostles," completes the "Pentateuch of the New Testament." The traditional title of this book is, in some respects, a misnomer: it primarily deals with the "acts" of Peter and Paul. It really should be called "The Acts of the Holy Spirit."

"As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, [so] walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ."

Daniel had the most incredible career imaginable; he was transported as a teenage captive to a pagan empire and became the primary confidante to the ruler of Babylon. When Babylonia was taken over by its enemies, he rose to the second or third position in the Persian Empire. There are only two people in the Bible other than Jesus Christ of which no evil is spoken, Joseph and Daniel.

Whose sermons are quoted most in the Bible? The answer may surprise you. Deuteronomy is essentially a series of sermons by the greatest Old Testament prophet. Jesus Himself quoted more from Deuteronomy than from any other portion of the Old Testament. Just as the New Testament epistles are our primary interpretive commentary on the historical narratives (The Gospels and Acts), the most venerated portion of the Old Testament - the Torah - has, within it, its primary commentary in the form of three sermons by Moses.

The book of Ezekiel contains some of the most incredible prophecies in the Bible, including detailed description of a Nuclear War and the cleanup afterward. Ezekiel ministered to a nation experiencing judgment for their sins, and may have some lessons for us today.

Ezekiel's name means "God strengthens, or God will strengthen." Ezekiel is one of the three that were called Captivity Prophets (the other two are Jeremiah and Daniel). Ezekiel never mentions Jeremiah in his writings, but he does mention Daniel three times.

The books of Ezra and Nehemiah (and Esther) cover about 100 years, closing the Old Testament historical books. The books of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles closed with the Southern Kingdom (Judah)'s going into captivity. The two post-exile books of Ezra and Nehemiah record the return from Babylon after its fall to the Persians under Cyrus, the rebuilding of the Temple and Jerusalem, and the reestablishment of the national life of Israel.

The Epistle to the Galatians is regarded as one of Paul's greatest and most important letters. It has been characterized as a "short Romans" and embraces in its six short chapters such a variety of vehement and intense emotion as could not be paralleled in any work.

There are four basic questions that confront each of us:

This letter is one of the two greatest theological treatises of the New Testament. It is the ''Leviticus'' of the New Testament, detailing how the Lord Jesus Christ is both the fulfillment and the successor to all that had gone on before.

In Hebrew, this book is called dibhere ha-yamim: ''the words concerning the days.'' The Jewish Bible regards the Old Testament as 22 books and Chronicles is counted as a single book. I and II Chronicles take the form of a history: David and Judah are the focal points. The emphasis of I and II Chronicles is on the Southern Kingdom and the preservation of the Davidic line.

Paul’s letters to the Corinthian Church reaches beyond this troubled fellowship of believers in the first century down to the modern church today. He brought to balance the issues associated with spiritual freedom and spiritual unity, discipline and love, spiritual gifts and spiritual living. He addressed the confusion of the bodily resurrection of Jesus and the future resurrection of His followers. These challenging teachings are aimed at the serious student of the Bible.

The city of Corinth was Hollywood, Las Vegas and New York all rolled into one. Corinth was intellectually alert, materially prosperous, but morally corrupt. Its citizens were devoted to the reckless development of the individual. The church at Corinth is the "carnal church" - spiritual babes, immature and undeveloped. As a member of the Inner Circle Peter was present at the Transfiguration, the raising of Jairus' daughter, and the closer circle at Gethsemane. This most vibrant personality's letters are rich in theology as well as practical exhortation, dealing with our living hope, suffering persecution for righteousness' sake, the use of heavenly gifts, patience in suffering, fidelity in service, and humility in ministering to one another.

"And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle [is] the LORD'S, and he will give you into our hands." And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine..." -1 Samuel 17:47-48

The two books of Samuel form a basic foundational study in the Old Testament. An understanding of this basic history is essential, not only to understanding the Old and New Testaments, but in gaining a valid perspective of eschatological issues as well.

How does your eschatological view affect your life? If it has no effect, you might reconsider what you really believe. Paul's epistles to the believers in Thessalonica are the two most important New Testament eschatological epistles. 1st Thessalonians is among the earliest New Testament documents: written less than 20 years after Christ's resurrection. Every chapter refers to the Second Coming. The most famous declaration in this letter is on the Harpazo, commonly called, from the Latin, the "Rapture." Paul's second letter apparently followed his first by a few months.

Of John's five New Testament books, these three include a sermon and two personal letters, one of which may have been written to Mary, the mother of our Lord. His Gospel deals with our past: Salvation. Revelation deals with our future. John's First Epistle deals with our present: Sanctification. It has been called the New Testament sanctum sanctorum. John's bandwidth extends from the practical, the Christian's Bar of Soap", to the hyperspace of our resurrection body!

Isaiah was the most comprehensive of all prophets: his writing spans the entirety of history, from the creation of the world to the creation of “a new heavens and new earth.” No other prophet matches his majestic eloquence on the glory of God and the redemptive work and sufferings of the Coming Messiah, all the while making us clearly aware of God’s abounding Grace.

Here is one of the bravest, and most tender, yet most pathetic figures in all history: a patriot as well as a prophet. He is known as the "Weeping Prophet": he watched his nation decline and finally fall under God's judgment. During Jeremiah's 40 years of ministry, he never received a hint of gratitude.

As one of the most important of the "Major Prophets," Jeremiah is a rich, rewarding study. It is full of surprises, deeply touching episodes, and extremely moving reading. It is also, in many ways, profoundly timely for us today!

Under close examination, the Book of Joshua seems to be a precursor to the book of Revelation: another Yehoshua, as Commander-in-Chief, will dispossess the Planet Earth of its usurpers -- first sending in two witnesses, then with a series of judgments of sevens, finally defeating the kings with signs in the sun and moon while the kings of the earth all hide in caves. What does the name "Joshua" mean?
